MSC — Marine Stewardship Council
An international nonprofit whose mission is to end overfishing and safeguard seafood supplies for future generations. Fisheries certified to the MSC Standard can carry the blue fish label, and the programme now engages several hundred fisheries worldwide, driving thousands of on-the-water improvements to fishing practices.
ASC — Aquaculture Stewardship Council
Founded in 2010 by WWF and the Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH), ASC is the leading certification programme for farmed seafood. Its standards cover more than a dozen species groups — including salmon, shrimp, tilapia and bivalves — addressing environmental impact, animal welfare and social responsibility, with independent audits and full supply chain traceability.
Friends of the Sea
Founded in 2008, this is the only certification scheme that uses the same label for both wild-caught and farmed seafood. It is recognised and supervised by national accreditation bodies, with yearly independent on-site audits against its sustainability criteria for fisheries, aquaculture, fishmeal and fish oil.
